Smart Clothing Workshop Sparks Insightful Discussion on Wearable Technology
On June 19, 2025, the VIVO Hub UoB team hosted a Smart Clothing Workshop, bringing together public contributors, researchers, and facilitators to explore how wearable technology can better support older adults and disabled people in their daily lives.
The workshop focused on lived experiences, needs, and concerns around existing mobility aids and future “smart” solutions. Through open discussion and hands-on group activities, participants shared valuable perspectives on what matters most, like comfort, dignity, simplicity, and trust.
Topics ranged from what makes technology helpful or frustrating, to what smart clothing might look and feel like, and the deal-breakers that could prevent people from using it. There was particular emphasis on making design inclusive, age-appropriate, and emotionally considerate.
We’re incredibly grateful to all who took part for their honesty, creativity, and time. Their input is essential in shaping truly inclusive health technology and we look forward to continuing the conversation!
